Derry protesters demand Israeli goods boycott

Anti-war protesters will be on the streets of Londonderry tomorrow calling for a boycott of Israeli goods.

The Derry Anti-War Coalition (DAWC) is due to meet at Tesco's in the city centre at noon before going on to leaflet supermarket shoppers around the city, listing Israeli goods and urging Derry shoppers to look for alternatives.

They will be joining with demonstrators in London, Dublin and other major cities around the world, calling for an end to the Israeli attacks in Lebanon and Gaza supported by the United States and UK governments.

DAWC spokesman, Davy McAuley, said: "Its time to revive the campaign for peoples sanctions against Israel, for a boycott along the lines of the boycott of apartheid which helped bring about change in South Africa."

Mr McAuley called for support from "everyone willing to take a stand against the outrages we see on the news every night - whatever their other political beliefs or allegiances".

He continued: "We reject the idea that the latest bloodshed was caused by Hamas and Hezbollah attacking and kidnapping Israeli soldiers. The anti-war movement doesnt support attacks or kidnaps by anybody. But there were already hundreds of Palestinian and Lebanese kidnap victims in Israeli jails, and relentless, deadly attacks by Israeli forces on civilians were continuing.

"It is only a few weeks since Palestinians relaxing on a beach, including children, were blown to pieces in an Israeli assault.

"Commentators who date the current spate of violence to the Hamas and Hezbollah attacks are making propaganda for Israel.

"We also reject suggestions that the people of Israel are 100% united behind the assault on Gaza and Lebanon."
