Statement and Resolution from South Africa on Israeli Aggression Against Palestinian and Lebanese Civilians

We, people of conscience, gathered here at the WSF Preparatory Gathering, University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, and comprising of individuals from social movements, trade unions, NGOs and academic institutions and consisting of a number of nationalities, inspired by statements made by the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (a group of 25 million members), the SA Council of Churches, the Congress of SA Trade Unions and a variety of SA Palestine Solidarity organisations, hereby declare that,

We condemn;

a)in the strongest terms, the war crimes that are currently being perpetrated against the people of Palestine and Lebanon

b)the wanton destruction of life-sustaining infra-structure in Palestine and Lebanon

c)the willful impotence of international agencies and either, the silent complicity and / or the active support of most governments in these acts of terror

d)the current and ongoing shipment of armaments from the US to Israel

e)the detention of almost 10 000 Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners, including women and children

We believe;

a)that these acts are acts of state terror committed by Israel and supported, sustained and sponsored by the United States government

We demand that;

a)Israel immediately cease its aerial bombardments and military attacks on Palestinian territories and Lebanon

b)Israel abides by the provisions of international humanitarian law and human rights law, and refrains from imposing collective punishment on Palestinian civilians

c)The international community holds Israel legally accountable for all crimes committed against civilian populations

d)The international community implements diplomatic and trade sanctions against the State of Israel with immediate effect

e)The international community holds Israel responsible for the compensation and reparation for the loss of life in Lebanon and Palestine

f)The EU stop the severe sanctions imposed by Europe on the Palestinian Authority as a penalty for exercising their democratic right and electing a government of their choice

g)The United Nations implements the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on Israels Apartheid Wall

We support;

a)The call by South African organisations to immediately recall the SA Ambassador from Tel Aviv and to begin the process of ending diplomatic relations with Israel

b)The call by SA civil society, that the SA government ensure that no South African serves in any capacity in the Israeli Occupation forces and that any SA citizen doing so will be prosecuted under the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act

c)The call for a strong, determined and sustained boycott and sanctions campaign against Israel until the end of its occupation of Palestinian and Lebanese territories

d)The call for a national day of action by South Africans, as an act of solidarity with the people of Palestine and Lebanon
