SIPTU calls for sanctions against Israel

At its meeting in Liberty Hall today, SIPTUís National Executive Council unanimously passed a resolution calling on the Irish Government to move for the immediate suspension of the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement with Israel until such time as that country ends its violations of international law.

SIPTU General President, Jack OíConnor said he would be writing to the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern and to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern TD outlining the Unionís position on the current crisis in the Middle East.

Mr. OíConnor said that SIPTU members would be encouraged to support the demonstration on Saturday, July 29, 2006 at 2.00pm outside the Garden of Remembrance, organised by the Irish Anti-War Movement, Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Lebanese Community in Ireland.

The full text of the motion is:

SIPTU unreservedly condemns the callously reckless and disproportionate action of the Israeli Armed Forces in Lebanon and Gaza, which amounts to nothing less than the unbridled abuse of power, and which has resulted in the deaths of several hundred innocent civilian men, women and children, and four unarmed UN observers, and calls on our government to move for the immediate suspension of the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement with Israel until such time as that country ends its violations of international law, and to ensure that under no circumstances is any assistance either directly or indirectly afforded to this aggression either through the use of Shannon Airport or otherwise.
