Metal and Electrical Workers Union of South Africa Support Sanctions Against Israel Coalition Statement on the Qana Massacre-30.07.06

Metal and Electrical Workers Union of South Africa (MEWUSA)support the SANCTIONS AGAINST ISRAEL COALITION and further hereby condemns in the strongest possible terms barbaric savage acts by the Israel Zionist Government and we condemn the latest massacre of civilians, mostly children, at Qana.

* HOW MANY MORE CIVILIANS IN LEBANON AND GAZA HAVE TO BE BUTCHERED BEFORE THE WORLD ACTS AND UNITED NATIONS IMPLEMENTS SANCTIONS AGAINST ISRAEL?

* AND IN THE CASE OF SA: HOW MANY HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THE SA GOVT IMPLEMENTS SANCTIONS AGAINST ISRAEL? The South African Government inaction is complicit in the slaughter of the women, children and destitute civilians. Statements of condemnation are not enough, especially in the light of Israel's decision to continue to slaughter more of the Lebanese and Palestinians. It is evident that Israel has adopted a fascist and racist policy of ethnic cleansing driven by Zionist belief (Ideology)

The events reinforce our resolve to intensify the campaign to isolate Israel. In mounting a massive support for SANCTIONS AGAINST ISRAEL COALITION, we call upon all Workers within MEWUSA and the unorganised workers, the unemployed, Non Governmental Organisations and Community Based Organisations to join the campaign and to have the "Mother of all marches" to parliament on Sat the 5th August 2006.

We call upon all MEWUSA members in Western Cape and surrounding provinces to organise workers and join the 5th August 2006 MARCH. At the same time we are calling on workers in NACTU, COSATU AND FEDUSA to lobby at the International Labour Organisation (ILO), International Confederation of Trade Unions (ICFTU), Organisation of African Trade Unions (OATU) for the Sanctions and exclusion of Israel until Israel abandons Violent and Barbaric methods which undermines National Sovereignty.

We salute the Liverpool dockers for their decision not to allow any Israeli goods to enter via their ports. The Campaign was strengthened yesterday by the decision of Fedusa to join the Coalition. Besides focusing on the 5 th August march the next major step will involve the major federations setting a date for a national day of action. We call on all three Federations namely COSATU, NACTU AND FEDUSA to convene a National Day of Action and also to urgently meet with the South Africa Government to further the People's Demands for the expulsion of the Israel ambassador and imposition of sanctions against Israel.

The Palestinians had a resolution before 1994 that Palestine can only be free if South Africa is free. It is overdue that we in South Africa now throw all our efforts into freeing Palestine. We call for no links with Israel, only links with a free Palestine.
