Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities calls for boycott

Cairo, 4 March - In an emergency meeting of the Arab Antiquities Authority, Zahi Hawwas, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, a key institution for Egyptian national prestige in the academic world, called for a boycott of archeological teams willing to work with Israel in carrying out the excavations currently going on in East Jerusalem.

Declaring that "we must take steps to defend the Al Aqsa mosque and the heritage and monuments of Jerusalem", he proposed to the other heads of Arab archaeological organisations that they "ban from engaging in research or excavations anyone belonging to universities or museums working on the alleged archeological project with the Israelis in occupied Jersualem".

Hawwas explained his request to the delegates in Cairo saying that "this is the only way to stop the destruction of Jerusalems antiquities".
